Quando ouvi pela primeira vez falar na possibilidade de um filme "live action" desta série que deliciou muitas mentes jovens nos anos 80, tive esperança de que fosse um bom filme e medo que se tornasse uma desilusão completa. Ao descobrir que Michael Bay estava ligado ao filme como realizador, os meus medos cresceram e a minha reacção inicial foi de desprezo, fúria e indignação. Não ia suportar ver Optimus Prime e Megatron rodeados de explosões atrás de explosões com mais explosões pelo meio, simplesmente porque ficam giras no ecrã. Depois vieram as imagens dos Autobots e Decepticons...fiquei em choque durante semanas. Tinha muito poucas esperanças de que o filme respeitasse minimamente o material de origem. Até que li o nome que precisava para a minha esperança renascer: Peter Cullen.
O Optimus Prime! Fiquei desiludido ao saber que Frank Welker, o actor vocal original de Megatron, só iria repetir este papel no jogo, sendo no filme substituido por Hugo Weaving. Desilusões, frustrações, esperanças e medos à parte, fui convencido a ir ver o filme pela
única pessoa que seria capaz de o fazer.
Transformers é um bom filme em si, apesar das explosões bayescas, da inserção algo abusada de piadas e momentos cómicos (obrigado, sr. Bay) e de estar sempre à espera de ouvir Megatron a dizer "Mr Anderson". Os robôs em si estão fantásticos em termos gráficos e ouvir a voz de Cullen logo no início leva qualquer fã de volta à infância. É impossível ficar impávido e sereno quando Optimus Prime aparece e se transforma pela primeira vez no ecrã. E ainda MAIS impossível quando este diz "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings".
É claro que também existem muitas coisas más acerca do filme, especialmente o pormenor de Starscream mal falar! Onde está o maior adepto da "facadinha nas costas" do universo?! E também detestei o facto de Jazz morrer...sempre foi dos meus favoritos. Mesmo assim, o filme só tem um problema grave: concentrar-se demasiado nas personagens humanas. Shia Leboeuf pode fazer um papel excelente como o mais recente membro da família Witwicky mas focá-lo demasiado faz deste filme um filme sobre humanos que encontram robôs que se transformam, não um filme de Transformers.
When I first heard about the possibility of a live action movie about this series that delighted many young minds during de 1980's being made, I both hoped it would be a good movie and feared it would turn out to be an utter disappointment. Upon finding out that Michael Bay was attached to direct the movie, my fears grew and my initial reaction was of discontempt, anger and indignation. I wouldn't bear the sight of Optimus Proime and Megatron amidst explosions after explosions with even more explosions between them, just because it'd look cool on the big screen. Then came the pictures of the Autobots and Decepticons...I was in shock for weeks. I had very little hope that the movie would respect the original series at all. Until I read the name I needed to read for my hope to be reborn from its ashes: Peter Cullen.
THE Optimus Prime! I was, however, disappointed to hear that Frank Welker, Megatron's original voice actor, would only reprise his role in the videogame, having been replaced in the movie by Hugo Weaving. Disappointment, frustration, hopes and fears aside, I was convinced to go see the movie by
the only person who could convince me to.
Transformers is a good movie on its own, depite the bay-ish explosions, the somewhat heavy insertion of jokes and comedy reliefs ( thank you mr. Bay) as well as the constant expectation of hearing Megatron say "Mr Anderson, welcome back". The robots are amazing in terms of graphics and hearing Cullen's voice at the beginning of the movie takes any fan back to their childhood. You just can't sit there and not feel anything when Optimus Prime transforms on screen for the first time. It's even harder when you hear him say "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings".
Of course there are still many bad things about the movie, especially the fact that Starscream barely talks! Where's the universe's biggest backstabber?! I also hated to watch Jazz die...he was always one of my favorites. Still, the movie only has one essential flaw: it focuses on the human characters too much. Shia Leboeuf may give an excellent performance as the newest member of the Witwicky family, but focusing on him this much makes the movie a film about humans meeting giant robots, not a Transformers movie.
